Ceramic coatings are a Hydrophobic coating that uses silica technology to chemically bond with a factory clear coat and provide a layer of protection that is more permanent and resilient than wax or other polymers. This creates a scratch-resistant, impenetrable layer of protection over your clear coat.
The Sio2 technology provides your vehicle’s paint with hydrophobic properties, meaning water beads up and slides right off your paint. This causes the water to encapsulate dirt and roll off the surface, giving the ceramic coating a “self-cleaning” effect. The hydrophobic effect allows for much safer and easier maintenance, as the glass-like coating leaves nowhere for the contaminants to stick.

Founded in 2019 by then 15 year old Oscar Bergeson, we had humble beginnings as a mobile business doing simple interior and exterior work. After finding a temporary location in the fall of 2023, Car Kings Detailing begin to truly grow. Offering paint corrections and ceramic coatings along with those tried and true detailing services got our name out there, and in July of 2024, we relocated to our new, permanent location here in Fargo, North Dakota. A lot of work goes into the prep and application of a ceramic coating. Here’s a quick walkthrough of our process at Car Kings Detailing.
The first step when a vehicle comes in for a coating is to completely decontaminate it. Using our triple wash process, the vehicle is thoroughly detailed and all contaminants are removed, to have a clean slate for polishing, and ensure the coating can bond completely to the paint.
Cutting corners at the beginning only leads to issues, which is why we put so much emphasis on the prep process. Our high pH soaps help break down the dirt so that when we perform the touch wash there is no chance of damage.
It is very important to not use any sort of wax or sealant after the decon wash, so as not to get in the way of the ceramic coating bonding properly.
Ceramic coatings offer numerous benefits, but they do not conceal or fill scratches. Therefore, we provide at least one of our paint correction services prior to applying the coating. To remove as many scratches from the vehicle’s paint as possible, we utilize several stages of compounds and polish.
The first step, known as a “cut”, uses a wool fiber pad and rotary polisher to efficiently remove scratches by leveling the clear coat. This process leaves behind fine swirls, which are removed with later steps. Using a more aggressive process like this is safer for the vehicle’s surface, as it produces less heat and is much more precise than a large throw orbital polisher.
Once the paint has been corrected and is in the best shape possible, we have to cleanse the surface and remove any oil or dust from the polishing process. Using a specialty cleaner and brand-new plush microfibers, we wipe the vehicle down thoroughly, ensuring no residue is left behind.
At this step, we also remove any masking applied for the polishing step, polish the exhaust tips if applicable, and prep the wheels, glass, trim and headlights for coating.
Now that our surface is cleansed, we can apply our professional ceramic coating. We are authorized installers of multiple brands, and use only the highest end coatings. While some less-durable coatings can be very easy to apply, the properties of pro ceramic coatings are slightly different. The “flash time” is typically much shorter, as the coating has a higher concentration of the active ingredients. This means a shorter window to wipe the coating, or “level”. With this, if any coating is left behind it will harden and cure much faster.
We apply the coating in 2′ X 2′ sections, allowing it to “sweat”, and then meticulously wipe the excess with 3 fresh towels, to ensure we do not spread the coating around but properly level it.
once our ceramic coating is applied, it needs to properly cure. This takes about 24 hours, and ensures that the vehicle is ready to hit the outside world!
After the initial 24 hours, the coating is 90% cured. Over the next 2 weeks, the coating will fully cure. At this time, you should not wash or take the vehicle in any excessively dirty areas.
If you do need to wash, use a Ph neutral soap and water to gently clean it off.

While ceramic coatings are strong and very protective, they do not prevent heavy scratching or swirling.
